We thought we’d gather up some of the best tips and tricks for training your pup!
Have a suggestion of your own? Be sure to share with everyone in the comments!
1. Make sure you are training in different locations! When the environment changes, some or all commands may not carry over when your pup is distracted or overwhelmed. Changing it up is important for solidifying the behavior!
2. Don’t forget to reward good behavior! Is your dog chilling with you quietly? Give them a treat! We want to reward our pups for good decisions as no one likes to hear the word “no” all the time.
3. Training is important! Make sure you are actively setting aside 5-15 minute sessions to train your dog. This helps work their brain and wear them out so that you don’t have to worry about them misbehaving while you are gone or otherwise.
4. Working on training a pup that likes to jump on things or go places they shouldn’t? Consider leaving a leash on even in the house. This helps to let your pup know, consistently, what is wrong and what is correct!
5. Bringing a new dog home? Try and stay as consistent as you can. The change can lead to accidents and behaviors that may not have cropped up before as they learn their environment. Just be patient!
6. Remember, a solid recall is one of the most important commands you can teach your pet. Spending the time to do so could save their life!
7. Some other commands people choose to teach first are: sit, lay down, come, stay, leave it, off, and heel. Use these if you’re looking for someplace to start.
It’s important to train your pup as it strengthens your bond and works their brain. Always check that they aren’t bored while training. Once your pup loses interest, it’s best to take a break as they could be frustrated.
We hope these tips help set you up for success! Now- go train your pup!
